Coggeshall Farm Museum (Bristol)

Step into a living history classroom at Coggeshall Farm Museum, a 48-acre salt marsh farm showcasing 18th-century Rhode Island heritage with historic buildings, heritage-breed animals and heirloom plants. Interactive learning stations allow students to rotate between hands on experiences like tackling seasonal chores, playing colonial games, hiking through natural habitats, meeting farm animals, sawing wood, and exploring historic farm skills. Grade-specific programs delve into citizenship, ecology and the experiences of Indigenous people, enslaved residents, and settlers. Grades 3-6 can hear excerpts from a local’s wartime journal, decode Revolutionary War spy messages, and learn about Rhode Island soldiers before carrying out camp activities themselves.

Museum of Work and Culture

Museum of Work and Culture (Woonsocket)

An immersive journey into Rhode Island’s industrial past awaits at the Museum of Work and Culture. Students can explore immersive recreations of a 19th-century farmhouse, immigrant home, bustling textile mill floor, parochial classroom, and union hall. Guided tours bring to life the stories of mill workers and immigrant families as groups investigate industrialization, labor and the search for a better way of life. Students can participate in hands-on activities that make them part of the story: act as historians and examine an immigrant family’s belongings, compete as rival companies on an assembly line, or negotiate opposing sides of a labor dispute. The Blackstone River offers an outdoor extension where students can explore ecology, water power, and the natural force that helped fuel the Industrial Revolution.

The Newport Mansions (Newport)

The Newport Mansions bring the opulent world of the Gilded Age into clear focus. These spectacular summer “cottages” were built for some of America’s wealthiest families, and groups can explore properties that connect the past to the present. Roam the halls of The Breakers, The Elms, Marble House and Rosecliff, boasting grand staircases, international artwork, ornate rooms and exquisite architecture that showcases how industrial wealth transformed American life. Kid-focused tours at Marble House and The Breakers incorporate characters and sound effects for immersive storytelling, while self-guided audio tours offer insight into the people, craftsmanship, and lifestyle behind the incredible homes. The Mansions offer student groups a rich connection to American history, immigration, technology, decorative arts, architecture and the social contrasts of the Industrial Age.

Museum of Natural History and Planetarium

Museum of Natural History and Planetarium (Providence)

Students can become young scientists, explore Earth science, and journey into space through immersive programs at the Museum of Natural History & Planetarium. Grade-aligned workshops allow groups to step into the role of engineers, geologists and space explorers as they examine fossils, investigate Rhode Island’s geological past, test mineral properties and tackle hands-on design challenges. Space-focused programs take students through astronaut training, challenge them to engineer a lunar spacecraft, or solve problems related to Mars exploration. Older students can learn about climate change at research-based stations and through scientific evidence. Extend the experience to the planetarium dome, featuring astronomy shows that bring planets, stars and the wider universe dramatically into view.
