Welcome to the Social Studies Field Trips section, where students can engage with the people, places, and events that have shaped our world. These trips offer hands-on learning experiences that bring social, political, and cultural history to life. Whether visiting historical landmarks, government institutions, or cultural centers, students will gain valuable insights into the social structures, geography, and global connections that influence societies today. Designed to align with curriculum standards, these field trips help deepen students’ understanding of civic responsibility, historical events, and diverse cultures.
Richmond, a region shaped by courage and resilience—and by art inspired by both—is where the country found its voice. Here, history isn’t behind glass, and art isn’t just hung on walls. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, with works from six continents spanning more than 6,000 years, offers guided tours to scavenger hunts for students of all ages. The Virginia Museum of History & Culture brings the past to life with themed tours covering topics like Black history and women’s history, connecting visitors to the people and events that shaped Virginia and the nation. And at the American Civil War Museum, age-appropriate options include a walking tour along the James River that explores the history of the museum’s site—Tredegar Iron Works, a key artillery production site during the war. Groups visiting Richmond can’t help but leave with new perspectives and a fuller picture of how the nation came to be.
Student groups visiting the National Museum of the US Army can learn about it’s role in U.S. history and help students develop problem-solving skills along the way
