HUNTINGTON & BLAIR COUNTY

History, Engineering & Sports

Railroad history runs deep in this part of the Keystone State. A trip to the East Broad Top Railroad in Huntington will immerse learners in a one-hour narrated train ride and/or a guided tour at the nation’s oldest operating narrow-gauge railroad. Then, head to Rockhill Trolley Museum and hop aboard a historic electric trolley for a 45-minute scenic tour of the region. Consider boarding the Proud Mary Showboat for a memorable sightseeing adventure with lunch or dinner and turn-of-the-century hospitality.

In Blair County, explore one of the eight engineering marvels of the world at The Railroaders Museum & Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark. Here, students can uncover the history of Altoona, colloquially known as Railroad City, and how the region became vital for railroad transport.

Check out a minor league baseball game and cheer on the Altoona Curves, or head to DelGrosso’s Park & Laguna Splash for a fun-filled afternoon.

LAUREL HIGHLANDS

Visual Art, Design & Architecture

Groups visiting Laurel Highlands have numerous options for educational experiences and field trip destinations. Home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site & Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater, a visit here will give students a firsthand look at the exceptional design of a world-famous architect. The Westmoreland Museum of American Art immerses groups in visually stunning displays by renowned artists through guided and self-guided tours, art programming and customizable experiences.

American History

Fort Ligonier, a reconstructed and restored French and Indian War fort, offers students a chance to be part of history through interactive experiences and guided educational tours. Fort Necessity National Battlefield immerses groups in the exact location of the battle that started the French and Indian War, as well as the site of George Washington’s first military engagement.

Local History

Ligonier Valley history comes to life at the Compass Inn Museum, where students learn about stagecoach travel in the 1830s and how daily life in Pennsylvania operated with Conestoga wagons. The Lincoln Highway Experience Museum explores the fascinating history of America’s first coast-to-coast highway through oversized, authentic, restored 1930s artifacts, including a retro diner and a Packard vehicle. More history awaits during a guided tour of the Flight 93 National Memorial, honoring those who lost their lives on 9/11.

Discover Pittsburgh’s rich ethnic heritage in an exploration of 31 Nationality Rooms at the University of Pittsburgh, or embark on a Rivers of Steel Heritage Tour for in-depth cultural explorations of the region.

Visit the expansive Heinz History Center to glimpse iconic artifacts from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and the world’s oldest Jeep. Five expansive floors of interactive STEM exhibits and hands-on experiences await students at the Kamin Science Center, including the new Sports360 exhibition, the Center’s largest, with more than 25 thrilling sports activities.

One-of-a-Kind Sightseeing & Sports

Set out on a sightseeing adventure with your students at places like The Duquesne Incline, where a century-old cable car takes passengers on a one-of-a-kind experience over downtown Pittsburgh. Or set sail on a Gateway Clipper Fleet excursion for a narrated sightseeing cruise of the Ohio, Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers through Pittsburgh, complete with iconic sites, including bridges and significant buildings. BUTLER

Local History

Visit the only museum in Western New York that focuses on Asian art and culture at the Maridon Museum, and glimpse Meissen porcelain, ancient jade carvings, ivory sculptures and rotating exhibits. Maritime History & Adventure

Immerse students in maritime history at the Erie Maritime Museum, housed in an authentic former East Front Street generator station. Extraordinary exhibits highlight stories and artifacts from the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812. For engaging local history, set sail aboard the historic 1893 fishing schooner, Lettie G. Howard, during School Day Sails for a unique educational sailing experience for grades 8 through 12.
