LACKAWANNA COUNTY

BUCKS COUNTY

Early American History

Discover what life was like 300 years ago during a field trip to Pennsbury Manor in Morrisville, a reconstruction of William Penn’s country estate set on 43 acres along the Delaware River. Students can learn about Penn’s significance in Pennsylvania’s history through a tour of the Manor House, furnished with a stunning collection of 17th-century objects and furniture. Experience living history through demonstrations and hands-on activities, including in the gardens and with resident farm animals. Discover period trades, such as blacksmithing, open-hearth cooking, writing with quill pens and 17th-century medicine during the Pennsbury by the Day educational program.

Walk in the footsteps of one of America’s most revered leaders at Washington Crossing Historic Park. Field trip groups are invited to participate in Colonial Days Field Trips, with educational programming that immerses students in early American history. Explore 18th-century military and civilian life and learn about Washington’s infamous Crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas Night in 1776. Several interpretive learning stations are spread throughout the historic village, each offering a fundamental aspect of the period through living history experiences.

Field trip groups can also participate in the Park’s Rescuing the Revolution Field Trip Program, where they will discover the events of ten crucial days of the Revolutionary War that bolstered the Revolutionary effort when it needed it most. Architecture, Creative Arts & Colonial History

In Doylestown, mesmerize your group with a trip to the extraordinary Fonthill Castle, built between 1808 and 1812, and a phenomenal six-story concrete showplace designed and built by Henry Chapman Mercer. The creative and visionary also crafted handmade tiles, each a work of beauty. Take a tour of the magnificent structure, home to the archaeologist, anthropologist, ceramicist, scholar and antiquarian, and learn about Mercer’s eclectic art contributions during the height of the Arts & Crafts Movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

While at the Castle, discover artifacts and history at the Mercer Museum during interpreter-led programs and museum galleries. Varying by grade level, different programs offer groups opportunities to learn about Colonial America and what it was like to live during that period.

Then head next door to TileWorks, historically known as the Moravian Pottery and Tile Works, and learn about the working Moravian tile factory built by Mercer in 1911 and 1912, originally established as a pottery factory. Today, this working museum serves as a keepsake of an artistic past that sought to survive the industrial manufacturing boom of the early 20th century.

Visitors can explore handmade tiles created by artisans using locally sourced Bucks County clay.
