A field trip to the Empire State Building is a remarkable experience for students in grades 3 through 12. Fascinating examples of engineering feats and innovative science are on display through 12 interactive exhibits that teach about the history, construction and legacy of the iconic skyscraper.
Groups learning STEAM and Social Studies curricula in class can connect these subjects to real life through immersive programming designed for different grade levels. Programs at the Empire State Building promote engagement, enhance critical thinking, and promote academic growth in learners.
Science & Technology
Grades 3 through 12 can participate in student programming exploring the technology and innovation that make the Empire State Building a marvel of engineering.
Grades 3 – 5 Programming
Students will learn about the building’s construction in 1931 and compare it with modern marvels, including elevators and lighting. Learners will gain a deeper understanding of the building’s energy efficiency initiatives and get hands-on with a creative art experiment using simple paper circuits.
Grades 6 – 8 Programming
Groups can apply engineering and net-zero design elements to the Empire State Building’s energy-efficient design to understand how the building remains a monument of sustainability. Students will design net-zero structures based on the Empire State Building’s energy-efficiency plan. Explore net-zero design topics, including efficient power use, control systems and monitoring, water conservation and reducing waste.
Grades 9 – 12 Programming
High school groups can explore small inventions that changed the engineering industry, including Otis elevators and other innovative technologies. They will also connect these advancements to the broader development of New York City and beyond. Students can engage with research and writing assignments that deepen their understanding of elevator technology, how science affects design, the role of technology in demographic shifts, and how the Empire State Building’s recent renovations of the Otis elevators blend innovative early technology and design history with modern advancements.
More Learning Opportunities
The programming above is just a glimpse of what a field trip to the Empire State Building offers student groups. Here’s a peek into what else they offer.
Grades 3 through 12 can also explore other STEAM topics, with immersive programming, hands-on activities and engaging experiences. From art and social studies to math and engineering, the Empire State Building offers incredible learning opportunities for school groups.
Did you know that the Empire State Building is one of the most photographed buildings in the world? The ESB offers programming that connects the building to art studies for grades 3 – 12.
Social studies programs will educate your students on the European immigrants and domestic rural migrants who poured their blood, sweat and tears into constructing the massive skyscraper.
High school math students can interact with the building’s viewfinder exhibit and art exhibition to investigate concepts related to the horizon. They can glimpse iconic landmarks and discuss how artist Stephen Wiltshire’s artwork depicts distance and buildings disappearing into the horizon.
Performing arts student groups can also entertain ESB visitors in the building’s dedicated ground-floor performance space. They can accommodate instrumental ensembles, choirs, and dance troupes for a rare opportunity to showcase their talents to consistent crowds.
On-Site Group Dining
The Empire State Building offers several group dining options, including the State Grill & Bar for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and Tacombi for flavorful Mexican dishes, both serving local ingredients and quality food.
