Take students on a hands-on journey through the rich history and culture that shaped Arizona and the greater American West with a field trip to Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. The museum provides interactive exhibits, engaging programs, and expert-guided tours that align with Arizona State curriculum objectives. Students will have the chance to explore eight dynamic galleries, each offering unique insights into key subjects such as American history, Western studies, arts and conservation, and the science of sustainability. By combining storytelling with experiential learning, the museum fosters curiosity and a deeper appreciation for the West’s enduring heritage.
The educational offerings cover six areas of study, beginning with An Introduction to the American West, where students learn how natural resources, wildlife, and diverse cultures shaped livelihoods such as ranching, art, and economic opportunity. Sustainability is another key focus, as students explore Western Spirit’s LEED® Gold Certified building to understand how sustainable design helps protect the environment. In the Oregon Trail and Westward Expansion section, students experience the adventures and challenges of pioneers through interpretive storytelling. The museum also highlights the influence of Spanish and Mexican culture on Arizona, showcasing the traditions of the vaquero and the work of Father Kino. Additionally, students explore Moments in Arizona History through Bill Ahrendt’s paintings, bringing key events to life. Finally, the Five Cs of Arizona — Copper, Cattle, Cotton, Citrus, and Climate — provide insight into the state’s economic development while challenging students to think about Arizona’s evolving identity. This well-rounded experience makes Western Spirit a memorable and impactful field trip destination.
