The John Brown House Museum in Providence offers students a glimpse into the life of John Brown, a politician, businessman, and slave trader who played a vital role in Rhode Island’s colonial and early federal history. Field trip programs cater to various grade levels and explore topics such as colonial life, the American Revolution and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Highlights include the interactive “Web of Complicity” activity for grades 4-8, the engaging “Young Historians” program for K-2, and walking tours inspired by Avi’s Something Upstairs for grades 4-7. All programs are led by knowledgeable staff or docents, and thanks to the Field Trip Free for All Program, standard educational tours are free, with additional funding available for Title I schools to offset busing costs.
