The Charleston Museum’s Becoming American: Charleston in the Revolution exhibit offers students an in-depth exploration of the city’s influence on the American Revolution, including major events and battles specific to Charleston. To enhance the learning experience, the museum provides two educational programs aimed at grades 4-12:
• Perspectives of the Revolutionary War: This class offers insights into the diverse roles played by South Carolinians during the conflict, including patriots, loyalists, and enslaved individuals.
• Revolutionary Charleston: Students will learn about the unique contributions of Charleston and South Carolina throughout the Revolutionary War, deepening their understanding of regional history.
Additionally, students can participate in activities including scavenger hunts or guided tours. The museum also offers broader educational experiences through partnerships with sites like the historic Heyward-Washington and Joseph Manigault Houses, where students can explore 18th-century life firsthand.
For more immersive programs, students and educators can book visits to the museum’s Dill Sanctuary, which provides environmental and historical insights in a natural setting, or sign up for themed multi-hour packages, such as Rebels and Redcoats, which combines history lessons with hands-on activities.
Homeschool programs are also available, featuring field trips and special activities designed to align with topics covered in the exhibits, such as Patriots, Protests, and Parliament, which allows students to role-play historical figures to better grasp the causes of the Revolution.
