The ANHC offers a variety of educational programs and field trips designed for students and educators, aiming to foster an appreciation of Alaska Native cultures. The center provides self-guided tours during the summer for K-12 and university students, allowing them to explore interactive exhibits, cultural demonstrations, and life-sized replicas of traditional dwellings representing the state’s diverse Native groups.
Throughout the school year, the Heritage Center hosts organized school visits, although it is primarily closed to the public from September to May. These visits offer a rich variety of activities, including an introduction to Alaska Native cultures, a relevant film, a tour of the village site, and an art project tailored to the students’ grade levels. Educators can choose additional activities such as Native dance, games, storytelling and collection explorations.
For schools unable to visit the center, ANHC offers the “Shavila Assembly,” which brings cultural performances, games, and storytelling directly to the classroom, making the heritage accessible to all students. In addition to field trip opportunities, the ANHC runs the High School Program. This program is designed to support Native youth by providing mentorship and cultural activities.
The center’s unwavering commitment to enriching students’ understanding of Alaska Native heritage is evident through its diverse offerings. This commitment creates a robust framework for cultural education and interaction among students from various backgrounds.
