There are some stories that stay with us long after we first hear them. The story of Casey Jones—his courage, devotion and final act of sacrifice—is one of them. At Brooks Shaw’s Old Country Store and Casey Jones Village in Jackson, Tennessee, student groups can step into that story while enjoying a full day of history, food and fun. Conveniently located just off Interstate 40 between Memphis and Nashville, the Village provides ample bus parking, spacious restrooms and plenty of room for students, teachers and chaperones to explore. With customizable field trip packages, groups can create an experience that fits their students, schedule and interests.
Discover the Man Behind the Legend
The Casey Jones Home & Railroad Museum introduces students to one of America’s most celebrated railroad engineers. Its mission is rooted in “Preserving the life, sacrifice, and legacy of the greatest railroader to have ever lived.”
Students can tour Casey Jones’ original 1870s home and imagine what life was like for his family during the late 19th century. Inside the museum, high-quality exhibits tell the story of Casey’s railroad career, his heroic final ride and the sacrifice that made his name a lasting part of American history.
Groups can view railroad artifacts and Jones family possessions, including the pocket watch Casey carried on the night of his final run. Additional exhibits highlight Jackson’s railroad heritage and the important role railroads played during the Civil War in Tennessee.
Outside, students can climb aboard a 35-ton replica of Engine 382, explore the locomotive and ring its bell. An activity room with train toys and rotating action stations gives younger visitors another welcoming place to learn and play.
Make the Field Trip Your Own
No two student groups are exactly alike, which is why field trip packages can be customized with a variety of activities throughout Casey Jones Village. Groups may add a visit to The Farm at Casey Jones Village, where students can enjoy the outdoors, see antique tractors, play yard games or try the gem-mining experience. A round of 18- hole Casey Jones Mini Golf can also bring friendly competition and extra fun to the day. Students can explore regional creativity at Art in the Village or visit historic structures around the grounds, including the Village Chapel and Judge Milton Brown railcar. Activities can be selected to match the group’s ages, available time and field trip goals.

Complete the field trip with a meal at Brooks Shaw’s Old Country Store. Serving West Tennessee since 1965, the restaurant is known for its Southern soul food buffet, salad bar and homemade desserts.
Surrounded by thousands of antiques, students can enjoy a taste of Tennessee in the welcoming atmosphere that has made the Old Country Store a beloved destination for generations.
