The I&M Canal Boat grant funds engaging field trips where students explore the history of the I&M Canal Corridor aboard a mule-pulled canal boat, as it would have been in 1848. This immersive experience includes a 10-minute Mule Tending 101 Class, a narrated 50-60 minute canal ride led by a period-dressed guide and crew, and an optional, free 30-45 minute Cor-Ten Steel Silhouette Walk. The silhouette tour introduces students to notable historical figures connected to the canal, such as Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln, Wild Bill Hickok, and Chief Shabbona. Teachers and administrators from accredited PreK-12 public, private, or charter schools in Central or Northern Illinois are eligible to apply.
