Come experience the real place that inspired Grant Wood’s “American Gothic”—one of the most recognized paintings in the world. Located in Eldon, Iowa, the American Gothic House and Center invites visitors to explore the setting that helped shape Wood’s vision, learn the story behind the painting, and enjoy a welcoming stop filled with history, creativity and small-town charm.
See the American Gothic House
The famous Gothic window is real—and it’s right here. In 1930, the iconic window caught Wood’s eye as he sought a muse for his next creative venture. The small white house with the odd window became the inspiration he was looking for and heavily influenced the painting’s backdrop. Today, the exterior of the house is a must-see photo stop for travelers, art lovers and fans of Americana.
House Tours
Step inside and tour the American Gothic House for up-close history and art lessons. Hear stories about Grant Wood and his ties to the home and watch a PBS documentary about the famed artist. For younger visitors, an educational cartoon is available. Interior tours of the American Gothic House are offered only on select dates or by advance scheduling for tour groups of 10 or more.
Visit the Interpretive Center
Discover exhibits that connect Grant Wood, regional history and the lasting cultural impact of “American Gothic.” Whether you’re a lifelong art fan or seeing the story for the first time, the Center provides the context that makes the painting even more meaningful. In addition, groups can find children’s activities added to the exhibition gallery. The media room features two educational videos, while outside, groups can visit beautiful native prairie gardens and take photos at the selfie stand. Admission is a nominal fee for guests over 13 years of age and includes access to the gallery, media room and use of costumes.
