The American Writers Museum is the only one of its kind in the nation that is dedicated to honoring American writers
Whether you’re a literature lover, a history enthusiast, or seeking a unique cultural experience, the American Writers Museum (AWM) in downtown Chicago is a must-visit. Located just steps from Millennium Park, this one-of-a-kind museum celebrates the writers who have shaped American culture and influenced generations of readers.
The AWM is the only museum in the country dedicated to honoring American writers and their impact on society. Visitors can engage with literature through interactive and immersive exhibits. Type on vintage typewriters, listen to spoken-word recordings, and explore the evolution of storytelling through digital displays.
Museum Exhibits
One of the most exciting aspects of the Museum is its temporary exhibits. Currently running through November 2, 2025, is Level Up: Writers & Gamers, which encourages visitors to create their own playable characters and backstory while embarking on a journey through the evolution of game writing from the 1970s to the present day. Opening November 21, 2025, a new exhibit, American Prophets: Writers, Religion, and Culture, will delve into the connection between religion and writing, featuring rare artifacts and diverse literary works.
Beyond its temporary exhibits, the Museum’s permanent collections are equally engaging. The Word Waterfall, a striking visual display, projects literary works in motion, encouraging visitors to reflect on the power of language. The Surprise Bookshelf allows guests to interact with hidden excerpts from famous American writers, revealing unexpected insights into their works. In the Chicago Gallery, explore the city’s rich literary heritage through audio recordings and interactive displays. Those looking for a hands-on experience can visit the Story of the Day exhibit and craft their own short story on a vintage typewriter.
In May 2026, the American Writers Festival returns, bringing together more than 70 authors for book signings, panel discussions and family-friendly activities.
Chicago will celebrate two more major events in 2026, the Route 66 Centennial and the Signing of the Declaration of Independence Anniversary. Celebrate these events by visiting the Museum, where you can explore a digital version of Jack Kerouac’s “On the Road” scroll, and discover more than 400 years of writing history with exhibits showcasing the power of the written word.
The AWM caters to individuals and groups with tailored tours highlighting diverse themes. Explore the challenges and triumphs of LGBTQIA+ authors, celebrate the resilience of Black writers, or dive into the eerie world of Edgar Allan Poe. Special student programs and scavenger hunts make it a great educational experience for younger visitors.
