The Centre provides engaging field trip opportunities for students of all ages, showcasing the rich history and visual marvels of the Welland Canals and St. Catharines’ heritage. Educational programs cover Canadian history, social studies, technology and environmental studies, making it an ideal destination for civic studies, industrial history and ecology lessons. In addition, they offer bilingual programs to accommodate a wider audience.
Students can explore permanent and temporary exhibits highlighting the local culture, Black history, and the development of the vital canal system, which is responsible for regional trade and urban growth. The hands-on programs are designed to encourage critical thinking, with options like “Hiking Through History” and interactive mystery-solving activities for immersive, role-play experiences for younger students. These sessions focus on problem-solving and historical investigation and are tailored to suit various grade levels, from elementary to high school, ensuring that the needs and abilities of all students are considered.
Additionally, the museum offers virtual programs, including the “Travelling Museum” program for younger students, where museum staff visit schools to introduce collections and local history. Virtual tours also cover themes such as the Underground Railroad and architectural heritage.
Educators can access resources, pre-visit guides, and curriculum-linked lesson plans to extend learning back into the classroom. Field trips typically run from 90 minutes to full-day sessions, with rates adjusted for program length and age group.
